My Story of a False Diagnosis of Missed Miscarriage (Absent Heartbeat)

By Priyanka Choudhury | Edited by Samruddhi Sathe

Life can be a rollercoaster, and sometimes the most unexpected turns test our strength and belief. I’m Priyanka Choudhury, and I want to share my journey of a false diagnosis of missed miscarriage. Today, I’m a proud mother of a 9-month-old, but this journey taught me to hold on to hope even when it seemed impossible.

A Journey That Started with Joy

During the 4th week of my pregnancy, I did a beta hCG test instead of a home pregnancy test. As a doctor, I knew beta hCG was more reliable, and my curiosity couldn’t wait. The result confirmed pregnancy, with a level of 186. My husband and I were ecstatic! Since we had undergone IUI, I was sure of my dates. I scheduled a checkup with my gynecologist for the 5th week.

The First Doubts Arise

At my first checkup, the doctor performed a vaginal sonography but couldn’t detect a gestational sac. Concerned, he asked for a repeat beta hCG test. The result came back at 1500, indicating a healthy pregnancy. However, a few days later, another scan still couldn’t find the sac. My doctor suspected a tubal pregnancy and suggested surgery.

Something in my heart didn’t sit right. My husband and I decided to seek a second opinion and consulted a radiologist the very next day. By God’s grace, the radiologist confirmed the presence of a gestational sac, ruling out a tubal pregnancy.

A Heartbeat That Seemed to Disappear

At 7 weeks, we went in for a scan to check for cardiac activity. Like any expectant parents, we were eager to see our baby’s heartbeat. However, our joy turned into heartbreak when the radiologist declared there was no cardiac activity. Devastated, I couldn’t hold back my tears.

Still clinging to hope, we sought another opinion. The new doctor suggested a beta hCG test to confirm the viability of the pregnancy. The results brought a glimmer of hope – the levels had increased! She recommended weekly hCG injections and advised us to wait two weeks before the next scan.

The Longest Two Weeks

Those 15 days felt like a lifetime. While I tried to remain optimistic, the thought of carrying a lifeless foetus brought me to tears more times than I can count. My husband and I prayed for a miracle, leaning on each other for support.

A Miracle Unfolds

Finally, the day of the scan arrived. My expectations were low, but as the radiologist moved the probe over my abdomen, we saw it – a tiny flickering dot on the screen! The heartbeat was there, strong and steady. It was a moment of pure joy, and we couldn’t stop smiling through our tears.

The dates turned out to be slightly off, but that didn’t matter. The pregnancy was healthy, and we were filled with gratitude. Today, that tiny miracle is a 9-month-old bundle of joy who reminds us every day of the power of hope and perseverance.

What I Learned (False Diagnosis of Missed Miscarriage)

  • Trust Your Instincts: A mother’s intuition is powerful. If something feels off, seek a second opinion.
  • Hope Is Everything: Even in the darkest moments, hold on to hope. Miracles happen when you least expect them.
  • Doctors Can Be Wrong: Medicine isn’t always black and white. Always confirm diagnoses with multiple opinions before making any decisions.

If you’re facing a similar situation, please know you’re not alone. Never give up until you’re absolutely sure. Your story might also have a beautiful, unexpected ending like mine.
